Surroundings can affect your attitude towards work

Surroundings can affect your attitude towards work

Your working environment is important. It's where you spend most of your time and ultimately, your surroundings can affect your state of mind, performance and ability to concentrate. For example, corporate companies take an entirely different approach to that of creative agencies in terms of how their offices and general workspaces are presented. We've all heard of the quirky office layouts of million dollar companies such as Google's London HQ.

So how do you take this inspiration and apply this to your own office space when you don't have the space or the budget to be as off-the-wall or ostentatious with your designs? Some low-key DIY(do it yourself) perhaps?

In business environments we can be applied like when decorating or re-decorating, space, colour and objects are all key factors, to bear in mind is about energy: encouraging positive and eliminating the negative. Consider these components when changing the layout of your conference or office.

Firstly, contemplate comfort. For example, if slumped in an office chair all day, ensure you have a chair with sufficient back support, and try to take short regular breaks from your seated position where possible. Secondly, consider space. Keeping your workspace bright and airy can boost your concentration levels. Aim to keep your desk as free from clutter as possible as the psychology behind this is ‘clear space; clear mind' and a cluttered desk can just invite added and unwanted stress.

Last but not least, bring an element of nature to your work environment. Natural light and plants ensure a flow of oxygen and encourage positive energy. Furthermore plants are said to absorb toxins from the air which may be affecting your ability to work to full capacity. An airy office space is key. Nobody wants to try and get things done sat in a warm, stuffy office - do they?
