GoodBye 2014

2014 hasn't exactly been a roller coaster year like 2013. In fact, it's been pretty quiet. What have I read what have I learned, what I have proved to myself, that's what I want to know. Not about the random highs, but the necessary and sustained lows. Not about the chaos, but about the easy order of silence.

I wish things could always be as simple. But at least now I am aware that such a focus is possible. That thing can be condensed to their necessities in a way that stops them becoming abject. Good Bye 2014 Welcome 2015: This is the time to say Good Bye to 2014 and welcome to 2015.

Be team player rather than employee

A team work environment has many benefits for a business, including the chance to develop new employee skills, projects completed at a faster pace, and increased creativity leading to more ideas and improved results. Teams are formed when individuals with a common taste, preference, liking, and attitude come and work together for a common goal. Teams play a very important role in organizations as well as our personal lives.

Every employee is dependent on his fellow employees to work together and contribute efficiently to the organization. No employee can work alone; he has to take the help of his colleagues to accomplish the tasks efficiently. It has been observed that the outcome comes out to be far better when employees work in a team rather than individually as every individual can contribute in his best possible way. In organizations, individuals having a similar interest and specializations come together on a common platform and form a team.

Team work is essential in corporate for better output and a better bonding among employees.

  • No organization runs for charity. Targets must be met and revenues have to be generated. Tasks must not be kept pending for a long time and ought to be completed within the desired timeframe. A single brain can’t always come with solutions or take decisions alone. He needs someone with whom he can discuss his ideas. In a team, every team member has an equal contribution and each team member comes out with a solution best suited to the problem. All the alternatives can be explored to come out with the best possible solution. Thoughts can be discussed among the team members and the                                                        pros and cons can be evaluated.

  • Tasks are accomplished at a faster pace when it is done by a team rather than an individual. An individual will definitely take more time to perform if he is single handedly responsible for everything. When employees work together, they start helping each other and responsibilities are shared and thus it reduces the work load and work pressure. Every team member is assigned one or the other responsibility according to his specialization, level of interest and thus the output is much more efficient and faster.

  • Work never suffers or takes a backseat in a team. Mike was taking care of an important client and was the only one coordinating with them. Mike took a long leave and there was no one else who could handle the client in his absence. When he joined back after a long vacation, the organization had already lost the client. Had Mike worked in a team, others could have taken the charge when he was not there. In a team, the other team members can perform and manage the work in the absence of any member and hence work is not affected much.

  • There is always a healthy competition among the team. members. Competition is always good for the employee as well as the organization as every individual feels motivated to perform better than his other team member and in a way contributing to his team and the organization.

Team work is also important to improve the relations among the employees. Individuals work in close coordination with each other and thus come to know each other better. Team work also reduces the chances of unnecessary conflicts among the employees and every individual tries his level best to support his team member. The level of bonding increases as a result of team work.
  • Team members can also gain from each other. Every individual is different and has some qualities. One can always benefit something or the other from his team members which would help him in the long run. Everyone is hungry for recognition's and praises. One feels motivated to work hard in a team and to live up to the expectations of the other members. Each member is a critic of the other and can correct him whenever the other person is wrong. One always has someone to fall back on at the time of crisis.

§  Promote Team Interaction. Encourage team members to share their ideas and suggestions with one another. In a team setting, ask each of them to say what they can offer the project at hand. Recommend that team members listen to and learn from one another's input and encourage them to express appreciation for those suggestions. Promote a positive environment by focusing on each employee's strengths and getting workers to recognize these in themselves and each other. Accommodate team bonding by building an environment of support and togetherness.

Team and team work must be encouraged at workplace as it strengthens the bond among the employees and the targets can be met at a faster pace. Workload is shared and individuals feel motivated to perform better than his team members.

How to make a better work environment?

A positive work environment makes employees feel good about coming to work, and they feel very much motivated for their work.

There are some ways to create a work environment much better:-

Generate Ownership:

 For any organization if we want to create a better work environment then we have to make them owner of the company. Before any founder/co-founder an employee is owner of the company. Did we say employee????
Arrrrrgghhhhhh, no we are wrong not employee we need to say team members. If we are going to forget this motto then everything is going to be lost.

Be Team lead rather than a boss

Boss culture can give slaves but it cannot create autonomous team members. I would like to be called first employee rather than boss.  So everyone is that much clever to decide what they want?

Open communication:-

In essence, a transparent and open form of communication addresses the team members need to feel that what they have to say has value. It is what makes team members feel that they belong in the organization. It is thus essential for staff to discuss the organization’s philosophy, mission and values, from time to time during retreats, meetings, etc to ensure that everyone knows what they’re working. Everyone becomes more united with the organization’s mission in their mind. There is mutual respect among all employees, regardless of their official statuses. This is when employees will not be afraid to suggest ideas to improve the work processes, thus benefiting everyone in the organization in return.

Training & Development-Focused:-
 It is necessary for organizations to be keeping abreast with the changes and train their team members accordingly. A training and development-focused organization has a clear roadmap for training their employees to sustain and enhance the productivity of the organization as a whole. A positive work environment would have routine trainings to improve efficiency and instill positive attitudes among employees.

Recognition for Good work:-
Rewards are necessary to encourage certain behaviors in persons. This is known as positive reinforcement under operant conditioning in the field of psychology. It is used in organizational behavior management as well: by rewarding team members who put in effort for their work, this will promote similar behaviors in the future.

Strong Team Spirit:-
A strong team spirit is not easy because it involves the acceptance and tolerance of differences in perspectives and working styles between teammates. There is a need for them to see that they’re working towards a common goal before they can look beyond the differences. I, me and mine these words are not part of the team, it’s only we. Failure and success both cannot be a copyright of single person.

Band of Bros:-

Have team-bonding activities that let the team focus on the positive sides of each member and negate the negative ones. Celebrate events like birthdays for each member of your team to show the exclusivity. Deal with issues together. Basically, whatever it is that you do, do it as a team.
Think about it:-

We can create such environment where employees respect each other in an organization. We can do, involves setting the right tone at work-- Not fear? Creating a positive work environment will yield far better results for employees and company.

Clear communication
 Good communication between a team lead and his or her team members is essential for a positive working relationship. Team members need to understand what we want them to accomplish, but we also need to have an idea of what they expect from ours. There should be an equal amount of communication from organization and team members.

Listen to everyone’s ideas
Set up specific times during the day to open office door and allow employees to bounce ideas off in front of team. Encourage team members, especially the more quiet employees, by asking for input directly—that will help cement the fact that everyone’s input is important.

Show Your Trust:-
You have to trust that they will do a good job—after all, you hired them for a reason. While you should be periodically checking in with your team members, You don’t want to be overbearing about it.

Have Some Fun:-
There are many ways you can be both fun and professional. Allow your team mates to decorate their work spaces to show off their personalities—even have small contests for the best decorated desk. Encourage employees to take breaks during the day and they’ll be happier and more productive.

Are you an artist or Programmer:-

What are your goals?  If you are trying to get a job as a programmer, then you need a portfolio that demonstrates your skill.  You don't need fantastic art if you're going for programming.  But if you are trying to make a complete game by yourself to sell, then you need to have art assets that are "good enough" so people will buy your game.  "Good enough" isn't a black and white area, but I know you've seen games with bad art.  If you are not willing to pay an artist (or you have no money) then you either need to learn how to create the art yourself or create a game that doesn't require anything fancy.

Programming is a subject most often lumped in with engineering or science, and there is countless books dedicated to writing better code, but is this a good approach? To me, it seems much more reasonable to understand it as a form of art.


So, why is it art? Writing good code does not come solely from studying books and lectures – like other forms of art, it requires practice. Books and lectures can teach you the theory and the technique, but not the art. To be a truly great programmer, you need years of painstaking practice, where you constantly challenge yourself into doing things you’re unfamiliar with – just like other forms of art.

Computer programming is by now both a science and an art, and that the two aspects nicely complement each other. We have seen that computer programming is an art, because it applies accumulated knowledge to the world, because it requires skill and ingenuity, and especially because it produces objects of beauty. A programmer who subconsciously views himself as an artist will enjoy what he does and will do it better. Therefore we can be glad that people who lecture at computer conferences speak about the state of the Art.

Not All Programmers are Made Equal

This view that programming is a mechanical process, that its output is either “correct” or “incorrect”, without conception of a vast gradient of quality in-between those is, in my view, dangerous. The most dangerous misconception is that all professional programmers are roughly equally skilled. Yet, time and again, studies show that the difference between average programmers and the best programmer is enormous. It’s difficult to evaluate the actual quality of the code generated, but if you measure efficiency by how long it takes to fully develop the software (including any necessary analysis, testing and maintenance), top-class programmers are up to 20 times more efficient than average ones.

On Hiring Programmers

Most will expect you to have formal education on the area – graduation, at least -, but do not ask you to provide with samples of your earlier work, done privately for your own purposes. Why? If a programmer truly loves programming, and has had time to accumulate experience, then he must certainly have a number of projects under his belt – and probably many made without being hired to do so.

Two artists show up for the interview. One of them presents you a wonderful portfolio, full of beautiful and inspirational pieces of art, but admits that he never attended a single class beyond high school. The second has no portfolio to show you (though he assures you that he has done some “pretty similar” stuff on his last job), but he has a diploma in some art major by some prestigious university. Without thinking twice, you hire the second, telling the first that while his work is “impressive”, they’re not interested in hiring people without a diploma.

If you are the kind of manager who will do the same when confronted with the above situation, but when hiring programmers, then it’s my belief that you are doing your company a huge disservice.
